The Peninsula Times Tribune called Master Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra "one of the
best sounding orchestras on the Peninsula," with "the most interesting programs,”
giving “dynamic and scintillating performances.”
Master Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra was established in 1965 to provide classical music
of a high caliber to the communities of the San Francisco Peninsula. Originally
under the direction of John Mortarotti, it was one of numerous art groups funded
under the auspices of Foothill College in Los Altos Hills.
Over time, as funding cuts occurred, many of the groups either disbanded or became
separate entities. Master Sinfonia remains the resident orchestra of Foothill College,
and is performing in the communities of Los Altos, Portola Valley and Menlo Park.
Under the skillful baton and innovative music direction of Maestro David Ramadanoff,
the orchestra has become a well-established ensemble dedicated to presenting quality
concerts and showcasing locally-based soloists of international stature to San Francisco
Peninsula audiences at affordable prices in convenient, congenial locations.
Unlike a full symphony orchestra, which may number more than 100 musicians, Master
Sinfonia has about 36 musicians and is the size of chamber orchestra for which early
composers often wrote. A large strings section, plus woodwinds and brass, is augmented
with other instruments when needed. Each member of the orchestra can be considered
a soloist who is crucial to the quality of the entire ensemble.
Throughout every concert season, Mr. Ramadanoff and his talented musicians provide
skillful, professional quality performances covering a wide range of composers,
from the 17th century right through to the 20th century. Audiences are able to experience
many familiar pieces, as well as hear lesser known or rarely played compositions
of the masters in music.
During each concert, Mr. Ramadanoff provides a stimulating and interesting overview
of every piece of music, just before it is performed. He gives the audience valuable
insights into the life of the composer and helps audience members maximize their
listening pleasure. Thus, the combination of Mr. Ramadanoff’s high musical standards,
innovative programming, talented musicians and concert lectures provides Master
Sinfonia audiences with a truly memorable experience.
